HEROES OF OUR TIME, PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU
HEROES, ACTIVISTS, PEOPLE WHO SAID, "THE BUCK STOPS HERE."
1.) Albert Schweitzer Volunteer doctor to African lepers Philosopher, Physician & Humanitarian
(1875 - 1965)
Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment, and
learn again to exercise his will ---- his personal responsibility.
Albert Schweitzer was born on January 14, 1875 in Kaysersburg, a town
near Stasbourg in Alsace, Germany (now France). Schweitzer has been
called the greatest Christian of his time. He based his personal philosophy
on a "reverence for life" and on a deep commitment to serve humanity
through thought and action. For his many years of humanitarian efforts
Schweitzer was awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize.
By the time he was 21 Schweitzer had decided on the course for his life.
For nine years he would dedicate himself to the study science, music, and
theology. Then he would devote the rest of his life to serving humanity
directly. Before he was 30 he was a respected writer on theology, an
accomplished organist, and an authority on the life and work of Johann
Sebastian Bach. But his career was, he was a physician. Doctor.
In 1904 Schweitzer was inspired to become a medical missionary after
reading an evangelical paper regarding the needs of medical missions. He
studied medicine from 1905 to 1913 at the University of Strassbourg. He
also raised money to establish a hospital in French Equatorial Africa. He
founded a hospital there in 1913. Over the years built a large hospital that
served thousands of Africans. Schweitzer used his $33,000 Nobel Prize to
expand the hospital and to build a leper colony. In 1955 Queen Elizabeth II
awarded Schweitzer the "Order of Merit," Britain's highest civilian honor.
2.) Mahatma Gandhi Indian Spiritual/Political
Leader, Lawyer, Activist and Humanitarian
1869 - 1948
Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked
the earth in flesh and blood." -Albert Einstein about Gandhi
(Mohandas Karamchand) Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in
Porbandar, India. A simple lawyer, he became the most respected spiritual and
political leader of the 1900's. Gandhi helped free the Indian people from
British rule through nonviolent resistance, and is honored by his people as
the father of the Indian Nation. The Indian people called Gandhi Mahatma,
meaning Great Soul. His career was, lawyer.
At age 13, Gandhi joined Kasturba, age 12, in a marriage arranged by their
parents. The Gandhis had four sons: Harilal and Manilal, born in India, and
Ramdas and Devdas born in South Africa. While Gandhi displayed loving
kindness to everyone else, he was quite demanding and severe with his wife
Gandhi studied law in London and returned to India in 1891 to practice. In
1893 he accepted a one year contract to do legal work in South Africa. At
the time South Africa was controlled by the British. When he attempted to
claim his rights as a British subject he was abused, and soon saw that all
Indians suffered similar treatment. Gandhi stayed in South Africa for 21
years working to secure rights for Indian people. He developed a method of
direct social action based upon the principles courage, nonviolence and
truth called Satyagraha. He believed that the way people behave is more
important than what they achieve. Satyagraha promoted nonviolence and
civil disobedience as the most appropriate methods for obtaining political
and social goals.
In 1915 Gandhi returned to India. Within 15 years he became the leader of
the Indian nationalist movement. Using the tenets of Satyagraha he lead the
campaign for Indian independence from Britain. Gandhi was arrested many
times by the British for his activities in South Africa and India. He believed
it was honorable to go to jail for a just cause. Altogether he spent seven
years in prison for his political activities. More than once Gandhi used
fasting to impress upon others the need to be nonviolent.
India was granted independence in 1947, and partitioned into India and
Pakistan. Rioting between Hindus and Muslims followed. Gandhi had been
an advocate for a united India where Hindus and Muslims lived together in
peace. On January 13, 1948, at the age of 78, he began a fast with the
purpose of stopping the bloodshed. After 5 days the opposing leaders
pledged to stop the fighting and Gandhi broke his fast. Twelve days later he
was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic who opposed his program of tolerance
for all creeds and religion. Rent the film. Won a lot of oscars. ENTERTAINING!
3.) Mother Teresa NUN & Humanitarian
August 27, 1910 - September 5, 1997
Mother Teresa, whose original name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was born on August 27, 1910 in what is now Skopje, Macedonia. For her work with the poor around the world she received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize and is currently being considered for sainthood.
In 1928 she joined a religious order and took the name Teresa. The order immediately sent her to India. A few years later, she began teaching in Calcutta, and in 1948 the Catholic Church granted her permission to leave her convent and work among the city's poor people. She became an Indian citizen that same year. In 1950, she founded a religious order in Calcutta called the Missionaries of Charity. The order provides food for the needy and operates hospitals, schools, orphanages, youth centers, and shelters for lepers and the dying poor. It now has branches in 50 Indian cities and 30 other countries.
In addition to the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa has received other awards for her work with the needy. These awards include the 1971 Pope John XXIII Peace Prize and India's Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1972. Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997 a few days after her admirer, Princess Diana. Both are sorely missed but Teresa by thousands of children who lived thanks to her.
4.) Eleanor Roosevelt American First Lady & Humanitarian
1884 - 1962
(Anna) Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884 in New York.
Her family called her Eleanor. She was the wife of President Franklin D.
Roosevelt, but won fame in her own right for her humanitarian work, and as
a role a model for women in public life. One of her most noted quotations,
and an excellent reflection of her attitude about life is: "It's better to light a
candle than to curse the darkness." Her Career before marriage? Social
worker in the slums of New York.
Eleanor married a distant cousin, Franklin Roosevelt, in 1905. When her
husband was stricken with polio in 1921 she began to work on his behalf,
making frequent fact-finding trips during his terms as governor of New
York, and later as President. While First Lady, she went on nationwide
lecture tours, and held over 350 press conferences for woman reporters
only. She wrote a daily newspaper column and articles for many magazines.
Eleanor was also a civil rights activist during her husband's tenure as
Roosevelt served as a United States delegate to the United Nations General
Assembly from 1945 to 1951. In 1946 she was elected chairman of the UN's
Human Rights Commission. She helped draft the UN Universal Declaration
of Human Rights. In 1961 she returned to the General Assembly. Later in
1961 President John F. Kennedy appointed her head of the Commission on
the Status of Women.
Eleanor Roosevelt wrote four books: This is My Story (1937); This I
Remember (1950); On My Own (1958); and Tomorrow Is Now (published
in 1963 after her death). (Used books can be a buck each.)
5.) Clara Barton American Humanitarian
1821 - 1912
Angel of the Battlefield,
American Red Cross Founder
Clara Harlowe Barton was born on
December 25, 1821 in North Oxford,
Massachusetts. In her long career of public
service Miss Barton was successively a
teacher, battlefield nurse, lecturer, and finally
organizer and president of the American Red
As a child Clara played nurse, taking care of
pets that were sick or injured. When she was
eleven her brother fell from a barn roof and
Clara nursed him throughout a two-year
convalescence. During the American Civil
War Clara was a battlefield nurse. She
delivered medical supplies and food, staying
with the wounded until they were carried to
safety. She was called the "Angel of the
Miss Barton volunteered for the International
Red Cross (IRC) while on a trip to Europe in
1870. She helped refugees of the
Franco-Prussian War in Paris and other cities.
She returned to America in 1873, and in 1877
IRC authorities invited her to establish an
American Red Cross. For the next 23 years
Miss Barton organized and led the Red Cross,
personally leading many relief expeditions to
victims of forest fire, flood, hurricane and
war. In 1904, at age 82, she resigned her post.
Barton spent the remaining years of her life at
Glen Echo, Maryland, just outside
Washington, D.C., where she died in 1912 at
the age of 91. Her body was taken back to
Oxford, Massachusetts for burial. Clara
Barton will be remembered for her strong
leadership of the American Red Cross, and her
great philanthropic accomplishments
throughout her life.
Send this to a child whom you love so that he
or she will be fertilized, sown with seed
and may he/she will grow up to bloom
in some more original way than just becoming
an earner, consumer, householder.
6.)Rigoberta Menchu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work for social justice and ethno-cultural reconciliation based on respect for the rights of indigenous people.
Click on that URL to see the facts about the government slaughtering 400 villages, 100,000 people, shooting adults, machete-in their babies and dogs. This bunch of Guatemalans is one of the sickest groups of people to walk the earth. Up there with the Indonesians who butchered a million liberals.
Rigoberto Menchu was born into a poor Indian peasant family, and raised in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture in Guatemala. As a teenager, she became involved in social reform programs of the Catholic Church and was active in the women's rights movement. Like her father, she joined the CUC (Committee of the Peasant Union) in 1979, after members of her family had suffered persecution.
During the 1970s and 1980s in Guatemala, military dictatorships became more and more ruthless. Under the guise of anti-Communism US funded troops slaughtered Mayan Indians in the thousands, drove them from their land, and forced survivors to convert to protestant religions and live in often brutal "model villages".
Around this time Menchu became active in large demonstrations, joined the radical 31st of January Popular Front, and encouraged the Indian peasant population to resist oppression.
In 1981, because of her activism, she had to leave Guatemala and flee to Mexico, where she organized peasants' resistance movements and was co-founder of the United Representation of the Guatemalan Opposition (RUOG).
Through her autobiography, which was published as I, Rigoberta Menchu and a film entitled When the Mountains Tremble, which illustrates the struggles and sufferings of the Maya people, Menchu also became well known in the Western world as an advocate of Indian rights and ethno-cultural reconciliation.
There have recently been some allegations that she confabulated parts of her autobiography. For example, in it she describes her brother being horrifically murdered by having a burning tire tied around his neck. When a reporter later established that this hadn't happened: instead it had been a boy from her village who was murdered in this way, Guatemalan conservatives used this as an excuse to claim that all the reports of mass graves, tortures and executions were also false. (See also: denying the holocaust) Her supporters, however, maintain that a few novelistic changes (making a man into her brother when he was only a tribal brother,) can be forgiven in a book which is not only true on a deeper level, but whose publication brought the crisis in Guatemala into the world spotlight, an event which is generally credited with curbing and eventually ending the reign of terror. Rigoberta Menchu accepted the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize in the name of all indigenous people.
7.) THE CURIOUS CASE OF HILLARY TRANSUE A judge jails this child for a MySpace spoof of her principal at school. 14). FERNANDO DE SOTO, rich kid, noticed that Switzerland where he lived had only recently emerged from being a third world country with Canton-Capitalism, i.e. BLACK MARKET farms making cheese. Subrasa. But the Swiss encouraged them to morph into street legal, becoming entrepreneurs and turning SWITZERLAND into the wealthy country we know today. DeSoto researched how Swiss Gov did it. A simple signature on paper allowing farmer-shepherd squatters to have title to their land so they could then get loans. Great banks were there, they could use them & expand farms into huge cheese factories. Combine that perception with fact that once a year, his Peruvian parents sent the teen to his original birthplace Lima, PERU where he noted the same BLACK MARKET CAPITALISM all around LIMA and in nearby mountains. Peasants felt disenfranchised, like nobodies, no hope, exploited by landowners. DeSoto created a volunteer group to get the land use laws changed. (He instantly became famous when his offices got bombed to bits by the violent Sendero Luminoso radicals. Peasants wanted Fernando's magic wand, not Sendero's commie radical plans) and DESOTO was able to parlay his overnight fame into 417 laws passed enabling squatters to own their land, ergo get small business loans become entrepreneurs like the Swiss cheese factories. The moral of this story is, wanna be a big cheese? Put your ear to the ground, grassroots research, get bombed and then make a team, lobby noisily and go for the CONGRESS and then the lawbooks!
15.) PATCH ADAMS Dr. Hunter Adams, also know as 'Patch', is both a medical doctor and a clown...but he is also a social activist who has devoted 30 years to changing America's healthcare system, a system which he describes as expensive and elitist. Patch Adams believes that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process and therefore true health care must incorporate such life. Doctors and patients in his model relate to each other on the basis of mutual trust, and patients receive plenty of time from their doctors. Allopathic doctors and practitioners of alternative medicine will work side by side. If you think that all sounds like a utopian impossibility, it isn't. Patch Adams and his colleagues practiced medicine at the Gesundheit Institute together in West Virgina that way for 12 years in what he calls their "pilot project." 20 adults, three of them doctors, living together in the 'hospital.' Free to everyone, 5 to 50 overnight guests. They saw 15,000 patients. Many crazy, never did anyone get a psychotropic medication. Patch got famous overnight when ROBIN WILLIAMS played him and put his earnings into the Arlington, Virginia model health care facility being planned on 310 acres purchased in Pocahontas County, WV. The Institute will include a 40-bed hospital, a theater, arts and crafts shops, horticulture and vocational therapy. Over five years ago, Dr. Patch Adams and staff temporarily stopped seeing patients so that they could coordinate plans for raising $5 million needed for the Institute's permanent and expanded home, a "model health care community." Currently planned is an immediate phase of this dream, a $400,000 WV facility so that their medical service to patients can resume within the next two years. The Institute addresses, by action, four major issues in health care delivery: the rising cost of care, dehumanization of medicine, malpractice suits, and abuses of third-party insurance system. Adams adds to his training as a physician, his experience as a street clown. In working with health and mental health professionals, he explores the relationship between humor and therapy using his unique blend of knowledge, showmanship and "hands on" teaching techniques. Says Dr. Adams, "I interpret my experience in life as being happy. I want, as a doctor, to say it does matter to your health to be happy. It may be the most important health factor in your life." He now, is a nationally known speaker on wellness, laughter, and humor as well as on health care and health care systems. He approaches the issues of personal, community, and global health with "zestful exuberance," according to Time Magazine. believes that "the most revolutionary act one can commit in our world is to be happy." And wondes why no school teaches even an hour of classtime on LOVE. He now makes a million a year touring, lecturing and funds these model businesses with the money. He and the janitor both make 300$ a month salary.
