THE TEACHINGS OF ROBERT HEILBRONER, Edmund Wilson and a few other, great Historians Arnold Tonybee, Will Durant and OSWALD SPENGLER.

Arnold Toynbee (the sour puss over to the left there---and that's the ONLY time he ever GOT over on the left --) might SEEM to be the greatest Economic Historian in the English language but the guy torments his readers with his overdose of a classical education. When he refers to PTOLEMY or SOLOMON or Alex the Great's deeds, he does it elliptically, tangentially pre-supposing you KNEW all these deeds, ergo we don't 'get' the reference! Maybe the whole story was in the TWELVE VOLUME version but the deeds aren't explained in the abridged version! One volume. The original STUDY OF HISTORY blew educated minds a half century ago but the single volume abridged that you find at libraries requires CLIFF notes as all his references, which come every other sentence, point to one thing: the holes in your education. That monster will raise HIVES on us wannabe economic historians! And not only HIVES! When he gives us original Greek and Latin quotes from ancient historians and assumes we speaka da lingo and don't need that paragraph translated, you wanna reach thru the pages and strangle this bozo! ELITIST EDUCATIONS IN ENGLAND confine the Oxford Grad to the NO EARTHLY USE OR PURPOSE ZONE!

No, clearly, the guy you wanna read is ROBERT HEILBRONER! He may not cover the Twelve Volume breadth and width of the Empire down thru time but he sure speaks a version of ENGLISH that we understand.

And don't forget: THE NUMBER ONE QUOTE from this guy "The cure for capitalism's failing would require that a government would have to rise above the interests of one class alone."

Heilbroner is of our time. He was born 1919, checked out in 2005 and among his titles, wrote a most interesting book in 1953, The Worldly Philosophers. The book is well worth the read. In his work, Heilbroner deals with the lives and works of, among others: Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, Veblen, Marx, and Keynes.

And if you like that book, you'll love Edmund Wilson's   FINLAND STATION. which contains a living tableau, chapter after chapter of highly readable biographies of the great Progressive, original thinkers down through time. These men come alive for you. The magical effect is that you become ONE with them and their thinking. And it's sure a lot better than stumbling through Toynbee's Oxford academic dither and blather. But you get a copy of Arnold Toynbee's  STUDY OF HISTORY and tell me! Sure, it will leave you a better person but the other two will as well and you won't sweat blood all over the bedsheets as you read'em.

THEN, other historians to read, Edward Gibbon, his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, considered a classic in England to this day.  Ed was born in late l8th century. And read  OSWALD SPENGLER who wrote Declne of the West in 1918. Boy has the west declined since that date!

And WILL DURANT wrote a 12 volume History of the world. Very readable. Get the full dozen at USED BOOK STORES. RUN don't walk!
