MONEY LYING AROUND IN THE JUNK YARD, ALL YOU NEED IS AN OLD TRUCK!
In L.A. Calif, a man with a truck can make 300$ a day picking up the scrap metal left on streets and alleys. Really, this article (below) was in my morning paper. When I exclaimed about it to a pal I was told it's a great way to make a ton of cash, underground biz, the best there is but driver must never pick up a passenger as the city has a new way to snooker you out of your truck. They set you up, send some phony to see if you'll let someone else get into it then allege you take a fee for taxi-ing! TREASURE IN THE JUNKYARD -
As the economy tanks, more trashers hit recycling centers for scrap !

Sergio Pineda pulls his battered truck into the unloading area of Kramar's Iron and Metal, one in a string of scrap dealers lining San Fernando Road in Sun Valley, California.
The truck sags under the weight of bent fencing, discarded lawn furniture, surplus sheets of aluminum, a decrepit refrigerator. As crews unload what amounts to $300 in scrap from Pineda's truck, two huge forklifts shovel more debris onto a shiny mountain of metal bound for China.
The junk business is booming, as massive construction projects in China, India and other developing countries have sent metal prices skyrocketing.
Coupled with a sagging domestic economy that has just about everyone cutting back, more people find themselves scrounging for discarded aluminum, steel, brass and copper to make some extra money.
"Barbecues are usually made of aluminum. ... You've got window frames. People used to throw out old brass bed frames. The ones of SOLID brass, not GILDED. Now they realize they can make a couple hundred dollars off it," said Mitchell Kramar, whose father founded the scrap yard 60 years ago.
"We used to get a couple hundred (loads) a day, and now it's doubled."
Metal prices started edging up about two years ago, Kramar said, and recycling picked up about the same time.
But that activity has really taken off in the wake of the mortgage meltdown and soaring gas prices.
"We've had people who were contractors, managers - we had a lawyer," said Juan Ayala, a Kramar employee who supervises dropoffs to make sure the odd tire or TV doesn't get mixed in.
"We had one guy in a band who had a van, and he wasn't getting work so he just started hauling stuff in."
Prices for paper, plastics and electronic waste have jumped in recent years, thanks to an insatiable overseas demand for raw materials. But it's heavy metal that brings in the real money.
Copper can bring in more than $3 a pound, and even a small amount can yield a nice payoff because the metal is so dense.
That's why plumber John Roberts expects to make more than $500 on a small truckload of copper pipe.
"This is a couple hundred pounds," he said, eyeing his haul.
Many of the regulars at Kramar are laborers or handymen who bring in scrap from job sites or from a customer unaware of the value of the materials.
Lately, there has been an influx of new scrap haulers who haunt factory sites, and turf wars have sprung up among those who cover the same routes.
"It's like junk wars," Kramar said. "There are more people fighting over stuff."
Just as scrap hauling has taken off, so has metal theft.
Law enforcement officials across the country report a spike in catalytic converter thefts by scavengers looking to cash in on the platinum and other metal components in the pollution-reducing devices.
A few weeks ago, Glendale Water & Power officials reported two fire hydrants were stolen - most likely for scrap metal.
State law requires metal dealers to keep written records of transactions and to collect personal and vehicle information from sellers.
Bills moving through the Legislature would tighten those regulations, requiring scrap metal operators to fingerprint metal sellers and instituting a three-day waiting period between delivery and payment.
The legislation is supported by the West Coast Chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. But individual dealers say it would hurt business, since even legitimate sellers rely on instant cash for their metal.
"Criminalizing the work we do is inappropriate," said Doug Kramer, who runs a metal recycling center in Los Angeles and is on the institute's board of directors.
"The waiting period, in any other circumstance, would be restrictive trade."
Jonathan Manhan, who owns BCS Recycling Specialists in Canoga Park, said a three-day waiting period would probably hurt legitimate sellers more than criminals.
"If someone is doing something illegal, they're not going to do it with a legitimate place anyway."
Capt. James Miller, commanding officer at the Van Nuys community police station, said his 40 detectives are spending more of their time on metal theft.
He said metal theft shows some similarities to the narcotics trade because there are usually two or three middlemen involved in moving it.
In an effort to reduce the risk of stolen goods passing through his yard, Kramar has installed a $60,000 security system that digitally photographs every piece of metal as it is weighed, something he said is required in other states.
In addition to documenting everything coming through, the system helps streamline the trash trading process.
Clients line up on San Fernando Road, waiting for their turn to drive into the yard. Everyone who comes to the yard to sell metal must show a California identification card.
Everything is sorted, weighed and photographed, and then the machine tabulates the market price of the metal for each customer and prints a receipt that they take to a cashier for their money.
Prices fluctuate according to demand from India and China, where most of Kramar's metal is shipped.
And while orders from China have slowed slightly, Kramar said he expects them to pick up again after Trump and his tariffs are gone."
