SOUTH AFRICAN CROCOSIMIA, for YOU! AS CORMS.
One of The world’s prettiest cut flowers EMERGED THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO from the mountains around CAPETOWN and JOHANNESBERG in SOUTH AFRICA. The latitude is 34 SOUTH, comparable to Los Angeles' 34 NORTH but they grow anywhere there's not a long, hard freeze. (In Alaska, you LIFT the CORMS IN SEPTEMBER, store over the winter.) The world's most unusual, primitive, gorgeous, splashy FLOWER, Orange Crocosimia --- fills the garden with CHEST HIGH blooms --in California blooming in JANUARY. The flower lasts 2 weeks in a vase, giving an art noveau feel to the room. Bright as a jungle parrot, it catches the eye!
These corms (you will be getting a huge box of them if you want,) grow in any good soil, are tender -- being from South Africa, CapeTown area, don't ACCEPT to be in wet soil when dormant or freeze under 36 deg at nite ---unless mulched well.... but with care, they can survive up into zone 5 at Canadian border with mulch, maybe. But for certainty, dig them out in OCTOBER when they die down to the ground. STORE in a cool dark place.
If you live in the ARCTIC CIRCLE, DIG OUT in AUGUST, after the foliage dies down. It stays 'gone' thru OCTOBER..but you dry, store in dark until LITTLE BUDS start. At that point, put corms into POTS around 3" under soil, where they can sprout in a cold SPRING we know that ARCTIC doesn't thaw til JUNE. Grow them in CONSERVATORY conditions, like SOUTHERN WINDOW in SUN, until LAST SEVERE FROST. Put pots out when true SPRING comes. They do tolerate a mild freeze as they grow well in ENGLAND but who knows about ALASKA? These guys are from AFRICA!
Hummingbirds love these blooms, dance around them all day amusing the cats who have never caught one yet. One mother cat housed her nest of kitties inside the field of these flowers. No one could see her. I only stumbled upon the nest hearing the babies mew for their mama one day.
CROCOSIMIA grow with gladiola-like fronds, chest or neck high. TALL. Set against fences. A bunch of them, cut with the fronds along for the vase, is heaven in a bouquet inside. Plant these bulbs in SPRING and soon you will be selling your extras as they replicate like bunnies. Two becomes Four becomes Eight. Every AUGUST and September when fronds die down, I go in from the side, lift the bulbs, separate them, dry them for a few months. BY NOVEMBER, their little buds are coming out, so I plant them. So this is DRYING OUT TIME. Once a year chance to get some so strike while iron is hot.
Crocosmias are corms; each year, a new corm builds up on top of the old one, taking its energy from this year's foliage. IN AUGUST when heat turns them brown, dig up a clump, you will find a mass of conjoined corms in great chains like big, brown fibrous beads. The top corm can easily be removed from the rest of the chain by twisting it sharply. Plant them in a new site: dig out a broad, shallow trench in a wavy shape, not lined up like soldiers ---enrich bed or plot with homemade compost and replant the corms a few inches deep and apart, gently backfilling and firming the soil. In spring, add achilleas, grasses and their ilk to mix and mingle with the refreshed crocosmia. When you have gathered all the topmost corms, dig DEEPER to find the rest. They can be separated and replanted, and will eventually produce new corms. Share corms with pals as you will find yourself with a gardenful on your hands.
