OH OH! MY PET HAS A HOLE IN HIS SKIN! A BIG ONE! WHAT DO I DO?
First don't WORRY. For millenia, animals have been roaming the wild getting bitten, MOTHER NATURE will FIX THIS FOR YOU!![]()
It's alright Ma. You shoulda seen the OTHER guy! HeHe! I really got him!
When treating a pet's wound it is necessary to LET nature heal it. Not only is it EASY but you can take the 400$ you save NOT GOING to the vet and use it for rent, food, utilities and gasoline! Nature doesn't need your money; she works for free. LET HER! She's in charge, not US!
First, your pet will probably have cleaned out the wound, but if it's a branch he fell upon, then locate any twigs or thorns which you pull out of his flesh. If he was attacked, you want to rinse with saline solution to get rid of the saliva of the possum or dog that tore that hole. Use clear water or saline water. (Boil a cup of water, add a tsp of salt, takes only l minute to do this) Let it cool by pouring back and forth between two cups if you want to procede quickly.
Properly covering the wound with gauze and changing bandage 3x a day is wonderful if you can do it but most pets will rip off any bandage pronto as their nature is to LICK the wound. You've heard that phrase all your life, well that's what ie means. THEY HEAL themselves with saliva. How? Somehow with spit, they build up a mucosy PLUG over the hole. You will never know it unless you bathe the leg a few days later and then you'll see this persistent covering, like Elmer's Glue coming off in slugs. That's what nature created to plug holes on animals. It's like that "NEW SKIN" product humans put on their wounds, only better.
Another thing nature developed for wound care is maggots. They debride the wound. It's a good thing. See:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/picture-galleries/7924099/Creepy-crawlies-Amazing-Scanning-Electron-Microscope-pictures-of-insects-and-spiders.htmlIF the hole is in the pet's neck or some place where HE CANNOT LICK HIMSELF, only then would it be useful to keep the torn area covered as pets do roll in the dirt. And as he couldn't lick himself, heal himself that way. Then a 'people' bandage rather than a spit one, could help the animal from getting infected. Whether you have the wound yourself or are treating a wound for someone, there are just a few important steps you should take to ensure speedy healing, less risk of infection and minimal scarring.

Things You'll Need:
* Nonsterile plastic gloves
* Sterile bandage
* Antibiotic ointment Neosporin works for me. Cheap big tube at super market. Always have one on hand!
* Hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine
* Lysol, Pine-Sol or bleach and water solution for surfaces where pet LAY while you did all this.Instructions -
Wash your hands for at least 30 seconds before treating the wound,
taking care to lather well and wash the entire hand. Use a hand
sanitizer that contains isopropyl rubbing alcohol if you cannot wash
your hands.You can use your bare hands or if you want, put on a pair of ordinary
nonsterile plastic gloves before touching or treating the wound.Wash the wound with chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide. Apply a clean,
sterile bandage to tongue inacessible parts, covered in antibiotic ointment or cream.If you must remove a soiled bandage, remove the bandage gently. Dispose
of the dirty bandage and the gloves.Discard the gloves and put on new ones to wash the counters. Clean the
area where you changed pet's dressing. Use a Lysol or Pine-Sol
product or mix a solution of one-tablespoon bleach to one quart of water
and wipe down all surfaces with the solution. Toss the used gloves and
wash your hands again.Change the bandage whenever the doctor recommends, or when it gets wet
from the drainage site, according to the Texas Department of State
Health Services website.NOTE: If wound is already infected, say if you found an animal that
was recently hurt and hadn't had treatment, if there are fly larvae
on it, simply pick them off. They're good!. They do DEBRIDING for you. Eating
off dead tissue. They do us a favor. Love your larvae! Your maggots. Mother
Nature made them and she don't make no junk!BOILS:- If it's a boil that's about to pop, steam it with hot washcloths or clean rags,
dipped in nearly boiling water. Hold rag til it cools to temp your skin can tolerate, then
apply to pet. Hold, steaming him well.Do this 3 x daily until it pops. Meanwhile, confine pet where no carpet sofa
will get soiled when it breaks. You make him a big bed out of clean old towels. It'll pop some odd hour
when he rolls over in his sleep. You'll find it flattened out. Good, now WHEN that boil
starts to drain, press edges gently so it's emptied.Then start above at step one. You may want to give a systemic dose of penicillin,
but I have had really serious possum bites on a cat where the cat had no
skin at all over a quarter-sized hole. Never used a systemic. New skin
slowly grew over the wound which slowly drained a fairly clear liquid
over a two week period. I tried unguent but in the end, couldn't use Neosporin on
the wound as the cat licked anything off. I didn't want to use home made
calendula wound closer cream as that stuff grows SKIN instantly
and you don't want to SEAL the wound. You want that daily drainage.

Unhappily, I was not able to leave
my attacker with more than a tiny
hickie! Bloody Damn Rott! However,
My Mom is SUING bigtime! hehehe!
So I ain't so short, am I?RECIPE for CALENDULA CREAM which SEALS ANY WOUND - Great for paper cuts on us humans.
Mash calendula petals in some olive oil, add shot of hard liquor, keep sealed in fridge.It is just a potent orange oil that forms around petals, reach in get a wad of it, petals and oil, apply to any cut. Great for pets too though it causes skin to grow back so fast and thick the wound may be impeded from draining. I make the stuff
all spring & summer long while calendulas bloom. Write me for seed, I'm astrology at earthlink net.
