There isn't a curb strip in the nation we couldn't plant with food. It takes WALKING on trash night, you grab the green can, full of clippings and dump it on a parched parkway. You do this a few times until the soil is black humus. Meanwhile you are going along picking up old apple cores, picking out the seeds, old mango seeds and plums and peach pits. You're googling how to sprout these things, and maybe you even get them started outside your apartment, in the semi shade, Little saplings of the tastiest fruit. You're collecting tomato seeds, (squeeze out, soak in water a day and a half, strain, sun dry.) There is no end to stuff you cannot collect if you know a gardener who lets cukes, chiles go to seed. And pumpkins? Every halloween early November, the crushed, molded jack-o-lanterns languish forgotten rotting on every porch and in every trash can dripping candlewax, their seeds still perfectly full of vibrant, edible LIFE.
So you go along doing that, then one spring when all that parkway salad became black humus, you plant. Your canned baby trees go in. Your pumpkin seeds, tomato plants are already started, a foot tall.
Now, you have to water everything real reg so next, on your strolls, you carry one of those 25 foot long or 50ft. fold up hoses that fits in an apron pocket, hook it up and water your work of art using any convenient faucet.
