SHOOTING BLANKS?Today I told an activist that every email file she sent me was either blank or illegible! If I'd have been in front of her alive, she'd have thrown tomatoes at me!
Now the truth was, I knew what she'd TRIED to send. I'd done a right click on the blank email and looked at what she sent, and it was there, all garbled, with codes and everything. (How you do that is right click on letter itself, and then pick "VIEW ONLINE" or "forward inline".) You will see what's there, text wise. I saw all the software she was using too. The file was third hand and was in something called mime format. I didn't know what that was, so I DREW A BIG BLANK twice that morn, if we count her EMAIL!
I told her that in the future she should take the message she likes that is in her email, or found online, then highlight the text, hit EDIT, hit cut or copy, get a new email form for me, go right into the body of the letter area and hit "paste". I told her she had to do something else to forward me that file. A current event, political conspiracy theory, whatever. Cuz what she was doing just wasn't working!
She gave it a try and got the text thru but not the graphic.
I told her that in the future, if she wanted some friend to read a long, political, dry file that was fabulously interesting, she should take a few seconds of work to make it look like a colored gum drop as I do all my files. I colorize, format, etc. And suggested that she should save all text she finds online, that she considers interesting and valuable to her pals, to save it as a proper file, as TEXT which means the extension would read .txt Or .HTM. Then she could fix the file, either using a word processor like microsoft word, or netscape composer.
I said "When you get INTO the file itself in your word processor, you want to erase all the routing marks, the DATE: /SERVER/ TO:/ FROM forwarding marks and the names, JOE@ATT.COM etc. Lose all those forwarding marks and other people's addies, clean the file up, and THEN save as html or txt and send them out as attachments. The htm would be the written file and the graphic would go as a jpg or gif file. Not together. Separately. Although if you're really good, you can stick a graphic in an article. Myself I haven't mastered that yet except for articles at my website. It's easy to do that as you control the placement of both files. You FTP them to your site.
IT TAKES LESS THAN ONE MINUTE TO USE A TEXT EDITOR ON any TEXT or htm you find anywhere online so that you can save it to cache and later send. Do this, you will then turn garbage that people won't read into a lean, CLEAN file that can be read on the other side of the world.
We all have one text editor "notepad" in our PC'S. Build An icon for yours. so you can open it in a sec.
Now, JUST CLEAN up your wonderful EMAIL file that you just found
online or received from someone in jumbled, unformatted text. I notice that NOTEPAD doesn't format.MY TEXT EDITOR SOFTWARE (found free online, where there are a few dozen that you can download,) does paragraphing! Yes it justifies the sprawling-to-the-right lines of most text files..... and controls the width to a predetermined amt of characters per line. 65 to 72. I like that feature. NOTE PAD does not do that which means you have to hand pull together your words. Line by line. Problem is, the Lancaster University that had that software online free stopped putting the software on line. Now I'm using the MICROSOFT KEY lower left hand side of keyboard next to CONTROL with an R and I fill in NOTEPAD and click enter.......dreary. I want to find another great TEXT EDITOR. Know of one?
So you're in your text editor, you get it formatted, THEN exit notepad or your text editor. Hit ICON for NETSCAPE and pick the third thing down on its menu, "COMPOSER."
USE NETSCAPE COMPOSER to INHALE the text. You put it on a directory, like I have C:\POLITICAL and C:\ROMANCE and C:\HOLISM and on and on. So you find the branch of the tree and locate that text file. TELL COMPOSER to look for txt, as it only looks for HMTL left to its own devices. THEN as you inhale the text file COMPOSER instantly turns it to HTML and you can format, colorize save. I always give colored paper. COMPOSER has pale yellow, pale pink. The other colors are too dark.
Send the file to pals as an attachment. The whole process takes one minute. Come on, you will be READ. We want to be the best activists we can be. That is the SOUL OF THE NET! THE ZEITGEIST of the internet!
