BOOKMARKS FOR THE CHILDREN, TEACHINGS FROM THE DISTANT PAST TARGETING THE FUTURE.

My gal pal makes gorgeous bookmarks, plastic encased, cute or profound sayings, a hole then a double helix of ribbon streaming off one end so you can find them when your book is closed.  I use them a lot as I read several books at once and hate to dog ear valuable books.

As she mails these little guys to me, I suggested she do a custom one for me to give to my SON in the mental hospital who refuses to read: "That thing at the top of your neck, it's a HEAD! Guess what, there's a BRAIN IN IT. You know what IT NEEDS TO BE NOURISHED? Words, ideas, wisdom, ideals. START READING BOOKS!

She got the email and instantly  thought I was referring to HER not reading books much. Untrue as she sometimes does. Metaphysical books. I know cuz she sends them to me later, all carefully underlined in colored markers. SO no --I clarified that my SON  was locked away in a mental hospital for an indeterminate amount of time it puzzled me that he simply could not bring himself to open a book or magazine, even a National Geographic and as you know there are plenty of those in mental hospitals.

She wrote me back "your ideas are too EDGY". I responded, "well I'm not a Hallmark kind of girl. I like edgy.  I THINK EDGY! You know where that sentence that you don't like came from? I was imagining the bookmark I'd like my son LUIS to receive. He refuses to read! as I always, when I talk to him, ask him to use the library at the mental hosp. and he declines, I'm frustrated. I just got it into my mind.  

That thing at the top of your neck, it's a HEAD!  Also, it is something every parent would like to give to their child! ...i came up with the first sentence off the top of my head. It's a true MOMISM.  In fact, MOMISMS would be a terrific title for your new bookmark sayings.

"Did you REMEMBER YOUR LUNCH BOX?" "Don't put beans in your nose today." "If you're hungry after school, eat FRUIT" not fried flour as chips or do-nuts. And such.
And for our best gal pals? "If you feel poor today, wear your emeralds."

"It is right that the wicked get punished, but you should still have some
love for them. You must love them as creatures of God who are having trouble
coming out of the darkness, and that thought enables you to tolerate them.

Observe yourself: when someone you love makes mistakes,
you are able to be patient and indulgent,
whereas, when it is someone you don't like,
even their good deeds irritate you, to the extent that you ascribe
questionable motives to their behaviour.

Only love can grant you patience and open your eyes to the intentions of
others.

"Patience is  an expression of power.

Strong people don't allow themselves to be shaken by the behaviour of those
around them, whereas weak people can't bear anything -
the slightest annoyance and they are beside themselves.

You will see people get incredibly angry over such trifles!

And often they are the same people who remain virtually unmoved by the
monstrous injustices others have to endure.

For me, what people can or cannot bear is a criterion for telling me how far
they are along the path of evolution."

I love wisdom as I am tale deprived. Yes I didn't get a single dose of family tales,
remembered, written down, hand illustrated. SPOKEN. I crave Old family fotos
Grandma and Grandpa --their childhoods, what they went thru during Two world wars,
the forced fleeing from Germany, giving up their dreams, their careers, regrouping
to survive in Provence. How they lived during the Great Depression in Germany. This kind of
reminiscence is the treasure nobody gets any more.

Where Grampa  went during the German Occupation of France, what he saw and did.
THESE precious things are getting lost by the new generation. In the hubbub of the city,
 the pacy schedules, daycare, work, dinner shopping, dinner, tv. (heave a sigh)
bedtime...lights out, WHERE was the story telling? The after
work raconteurism as we wind down. It might fit in at the dinner table, but
who of us heard the full story of our ancestors there? Mostly it was 'what
I did today'. Or didn't do. Our country is a people in deep deficit of
history, culture. People who live out on the land, farming all day, in
natural rhythyms probably share more of the family history. I'm betting the
average serf in the Dark ages knew more about his great grandparents
and THEIRS back of them... than we know. And certainly inherited
the recipes, the farming tips, the ancient wisdom to a greater extent
than we do. So forget the costly plane tickets or gas, the pricey hotel,
the long trip, the new clothes and the costly gifts.

SEND them a simple EMAIL an illustrated HTM file of the family
history. Branch by branch of the tree as you remember it, going back as far
as you can. Keep a copy on your hard drive for your own grandkids. And
theirs. The FUTURE may not have hard drives but years from now but there
WILL be some technology that you can 'transfer' into or onto some byte
repository of the future ...sign me Mother of Four kids who haven't a clue
about their family's distant past, grand mother of four grandkids who
likewise haven't and will never have unless I get busy sorting bytes and
making jpgs and gif files out of family photos that I inherited. And there's no way
to share the wisdom unless I learn to make plastic bookmarks. Scrapbooks.

THIS JUST IN: My Aunt's son inherited boxes of photos from Europe, he
scans and shares.Does the genealogy work too. I now have photos of great
grandpa's Budapest Circus/ Vaudeville act playing the TOWER OF LONDON
and Queen Mary in attendance in 1900.
