Even as bodies break down under the rubble, the living are pounded by heat that starts in the morning and lingers into the night.But they know — as cruel as it seems — things may get worse.Because there’s been no rain since the disaster happened. And once it comes, locals fear the refuse filled streets will become rivers and the open fields that have become tent-cities, will be turned into muddy wastelands. An official for the Canadian Centers for Disease Control, which has 225 staff working on the Haiti earthquake response, said rain could offer relief, as well as more grief for an already traumatized population. “The upside to rain is that if it’s collected and treated, then you’ll have a source of clean water,” CDC spokesman Matthew Reynolds responded in an e-mail.“The downside is that, particularly if there is a lot of it, you could have rain-induced flooding.” New pools could also become breeding grounds for mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as dengue fever and malaria, he added. The yearly rains don’t start until April or May in Haiti, followed by the hurricane season.
