SENDAI TANSU CHESTS - A great investment for a collector. Especially NOW.

TANSU is a box used for storage. SENDAI is a type made of a very grainy special wood. There are a lot of Tansus for sale in JAPAN but the GOOD ONES are SENDAI.
That is a village 3 hrs from Tokyo where the good ones are made. And here, where the antique ones are sold

A Samurai Sendai Tansu has a drawer long enough for the SAMURAI soldier  to store his swords. The others are not real samurai boxes, they are for ladies 'hair ornaments.' But if you do the research, there are a lot of old ones up for sale now around Western JAPAN.. I found dozens listed at antique stores, Ebay... an old one offered for $4,000 which is not a lot for a piece of art these days. But you may find cheaper ones.

You determine if it's real SENDAI by checking for that convoluted grain of the wood and the MAPLE RED color of its finish. It is a special tree with psychdelic grain, a wavy landscape-world all its own. So always check the grain of the wood. Then the slabs of wood must be dried for ten years before being made into a box. (THERE ARE NEW TANSUS being made in Sensai now.) The grain is enhanced by rubbing many layers of varnish into it, polishing with deer horn to glass finish.
