THE INDIANS ARE COMING! THE INDIANS ARE COMING!![]()
THE COBELL LAWSUIT against the USA is the BIGGEST LAWSUIT
AMERICA EVER FACED. A half million INDIANS want their OIL rights MONEY and are asking for 176 billion dollars.
It appears that the good ole US of A told the INDIANS (via the Feb 8th, 1887 "DAWES ACT") that IF they minded their manners, they could have some land and it would be theirs for posterity. 180 acres per man. So the Indians decided to behave, they built homes, made schools and settled down. And acquired that land. Not the best farm land. Kind of dry and parched and scruffy and ugly but...don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Read about that here:
http://www.pbs.org/weta/thewest/resources/archives/eight/dawes.htmForty years go by, and it turns out there's some mucky black soup under the ground. Maybe that's why nothing will grow. So along came the Dept of the Interior and told the Indian that they wanted to drill that useless land for oil and the gov promised that they'd pay every single Indian whose land was getting drilled for ALLL the oil they found but that, since they (the Indians, ) were too 'stoo-pid', the Dept of the Interior would keep the books. http://www.indiantrust.com/
So the Indians said OK, don't worry, right? After all, it's the American Government saying the check is in the mail. And for a hundred years the US of A drilled and they drilled and true to their word, some Indians got eighty cents a year for those oil rights. Some of them only got a nickle maybe a big land-owner would get five dollars. The guy with the most land of any INDIAN got 87$ a year.
Now, along comes the late 20th century and oil is suddenly kind of valuable. The Indians knew that oil was a valuable commodity, so in the 90's, an American Indian woman named ELOUISE COBELL
got a lawyer. The Lawyer did some calculations on how much oil was removed. It turns out the potential liability of the U.S. government could go as high as 176 billion dollars although figures in the case are disputed by the two parties. Plaintiffs have suggested that high figure but the defendants (mostly it's whatever HEAD MAN is at the Dept of the Interior during every appeal, ) have suggested a number in the low millions.
Boooooo! HISSSSS! Cheapos! Stealing Candy from Babies! So this goes to court.
Well, the gov told the judge, hey all that oil has already been all drilled, sold off and the Gov's claiming they lost the books. The case dragged on. The Indians sued three Secretaries of the Interior. Each quit. One of the Dept of Interior heads, Secretary Norton, left office & went to work for SHELL OIL, the typical USA PENTAGON DEPT OF INTERIOR Revolving door policy. For the last 12 years this legal battle went on. And the Indians seemed to lose every step of the way.
Finally, Senate Indian Affairs Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., promised at the end of a March 1 hearing that he would continue to press for legislation that would end the lawsuit. He added that Indian Country "won't be happy" with the specifics of his legislation, the Indians are encouraged that the chairman remains committed to resolving this issue. No other member of Congress has pushed these issues even that far and they appreciate "Sen. McCain's long-standing concerns over the government's injustices to Native people." What are they smoking? That's a half million desperate voters McCain can count on. OSAMA? The ball is in your court. Care to come up against SHELL OIL and the DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR?
SO hang on for news about the CORBELL CLASS ACTION SUIT. Indians want their oil wampum, and they deserve it just because we killed more INDIANS than HITLER killed Jews.
