Egypt is temporarily opening its border with the Gaza Strip to allow
humanitarian aid into the region.

President Hosni Mubarak gave the order to open the Rafah crossing to the
Gaza Strip on Tuesday, a day after Israeli commandos boarded a Gaza-bound
aid flotilla in international waters and killed at least nine international
peace activists.

The six-ship international convoy was attempting to carry 10,000 tons of
supplies into the Gaza Strip in defiance of Israel's three-year blockade.

The U.N. Security Council called early Tuesday for an "impartial" and
"transparent" investigation into the incident.

After hours of emergency negotiations, the 15 council members agreed to a
statement condemning unspecified acts that resulted in the deaths.

The Security Council also requested that Israel immediately release the
ships and civilians it is holding.

Israeli officials say 50 of the activists from the ships have been taken to
the airport for deportation. They said the others have refused and will
remain in custody. Israel has not allowed access to the activists.

International activists say they will make another attempt to break
Israel's blockade of Gaza. Reuters news quotes activists as saying the
Rachel Corrie cargo ship set off from Malta Monday.

Israel has said its commandos opened fire on the activists after being
attacked with knives, pipes and gunfire. But Turkey's Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu called the operation "murder conducted by a state."
